Remaking the seat cover

motorbike seat cover1. What to do?
Wear, cracks, crevices, your seat is damaged and you are, rightly, that the price of a new saddle is prohibitive. Some manufacturers offer bag retail for about 120 Euros. Alternatively, it is possible to find a saddle in good condition in a wreck. Finally, we can go to a saddler and choose a personalized according to your taste. The saddle can range from simple work from 92 Euros to elegant and refined to 220 Euros. And even in this case, it is often cheaper than the original full saddle.

2. The necessary equipment
Today, a coupon backboard – to resurface the seat – is not at all street corners. Previously, we found relatively easily for cutting in supermarkets furnishings and decoration. In this area, the leatherette seems outmoded. It is less easy to find. This solution has another advantage: you can choose your color. To fasten securely into the plastic leatherette saddle must be fitted with a powerful stapler, designed to fix the wallpaper on the wall. Take it or buy one: we find from 15 €. Beware of the use of staples too long: it is 6 mm, 8 mm is too much.

3. Loosen the old cover
Originally, the cover is fixed into the plastic of the saddle staples, sometimes with a little glue to prevent leakage. To remove all staples, peel them first with a thin screwdriver. Then, use good tweezers to pull them out. When they are old, they often break: remove all. The old glue, if still does not resist the pull on the cover.

4. Work the foam saddle
Once the cover removed, the foam pad appears and you can judge its condition. Ours shows traces due to water infiltration. Let the foam is in a satisfactory condition and ready to receive a new surface, or you want to modify. We can dig up the driver gently with a cutter. It is also possible to make the passenger more comfortable adding a “slice” of foam. In this case, buy the foam density. The denser and less easily it crashed. For your satisfaction, you can match the color of the new leatherette than your bike.

5. Be a good boss
The old cover is obviously a bit distorted by its use, but it can serve as a model (the model name in sewing). It is cut without making mistakes in the future leatherette cover nine. Feel free to cut a few inches wider. This will give you the outlet to exert traction and format using the elasticity of leatherette. The whole problem is to adapt to a flat surface with multiple curves without making unsightly folds.

6. Staple the old cover
Start by stapling in the middle of both sides of the saddle to continue gradually to each end. Clip and go in maintaining tension sufficient. Keep the tension while stapling correctly is not easy: get help if you may. For curves in the saddle, made to turn the corner leatherette pulling and folding inside, while stapling over. Make sure that the folds are not seen on the exposed portion of the saddle, if not repeat your work by undoing what it takes, stretch and staple again. The elasticity of artificial leather may be insufficient. You can heat it with a hair dryer or a heat gun to soften it.

7. And that’s the result
Some saddles may present difficulties on the back. The height may be such that you will be forced to bend the leatherette on the outside. Make one beautiful fold each corner of the back, well balanced for aesthetics. If the saddle has the unusual go much on the tank (like on the trails), the curves will be difficult to negotiate without folds. On a classic saddle shape, the result is satisfactory. Especially since the leatherette that you installed is generally thicker and therefore more resistant than the original cover.
